Conversations Unplugged

with Dr. John Kim

At 33 years old, Dr. John Kim had a heart attack. He had believed he was living a healthy life, but an 85% blockage in his left anterior descending artery landed him in the catheterization lab receiving a stent. The experience pushed him to start asking what else might have been affecting his health beneath the surface. Subsequent testing identified a number of potential issues, including Bartonella infection, mold exposure, and heavy metals. In this conversation with STEMREGEN Founder and Chief Science Officer Christian Drapeau, Dr. Kim explains why that experience ultimately led him to focus much of his work on mold and environmental health.

Dr. John Kim

Dr. Kim describes health through what he calls the “toxic bucket effect,” where multiple environmental and biological stressors may accumulate rather than acting in isolation. Mold became a particular area of interest for him because of its potential effects on cellular function. He discusses how certain mycotoxins may contribute to oxidative stress and interfere with cellular membranes, mitochondrial function, and other biological processes. He also points to possible exposure through water-damaged buildings and contaminated foods, emphasizing that mold is not always something a person can see or smell.

Inside the home, Dr. Kim recommends paying close attention to moisture. He suggests keeping indoor humidity below 50%, and ideally closer to 40% when practical, while using an environmental monitor to keep track of changing conditions. For anyone concerned about previous water damage or unexplained symptoms, he recommends investigating the environment rather than assuming that an apparently clean wall means there is nothing behind it. Professional assessment can include air, surface, and moisture testing, while lower-cost home testing kits may provide an initial picture before deciding whether a deeper inspection is warranted.

Dr. Kim’s connection to Christian’s work is also personal. Three years ago, he ruptured his Achilles tendon and says he incorporated STEMREGEN into his routine following the injury. According to Dr. Kim, his surgeon was surprised by the pace of his recovery, an experience he credits in part to the protocol he followed. His broader message is equally personal: major health events can sometimes expose factors we had never thought to investigate. For Dr. Kim, his heart attack became the catalyst for looking more closely at the environment around him and understanding how everyday exposures may interact with long-term health.
